My research broadly concerns the social and ethical impacts algorithms. Much of my work focuses on algorithmic literacy–how people learn about and make sense of algorithms. In this, I am interested in questions about power, individual and collective agency, governance of algorithms (particularly bottom-up governance), life chances and opportunities, among other matters. I also study platformization, or the ways that online platforms increasingly reconfigure life across spheres and how this alters how we think about matters of great consequence like truth, harm, connection, and representation.
